These were around £1500 as an optional extra from the Vauxhall / Opel dealer, and are quite rare to find. Luckily I happened to find the complete system on Ebay which was in excellent working condition and came with the glovebox inner so I did not need cut my original for the CDROM reader. It took a little time to work out the wiring as there were no guides or instructions anywhere. It was initially fitted to my Vectra in 2003, I then removed and sold it on a little time later.
The Carin was based on the Philips VDO Dayton system which ran from a dedicated CDROM reader that lives in the glovebox. It then uses a VDO Dayton CDROM to run the maps and send turn by turn instructions to the LCD display and speaker.
The Carin Navigation system includes integrated LCD display (replaces ashtray and cupholders), CDROM reader, Speaker and GPS antenna. Most of the wiring is connected to harness plugs X1 & X2.
Access X1 & X2 plugs by removing the trim in the front passenger footwell. Disconnect the battery before pulling any of the plugs, this will avoid needing to reset the airbag light later!
HOW ITS ALL WIRED UP
Red – Live
Take this wire to a spare fuse holder and use a 20A Fuse.
Brown – Earth
Connect to a good earth point
Brown & Red – Ignition (off when key is removed)
Harness plug X1 pin 70, this was always live on mine even when the key was removed, so I used pin 40 instead, check with multimeter to make sure first!
All this is for is to stop you leaving the satnav on by accident.
White & Black – Reverse Lights
Harness plug X1 pin 18, so the satnav knows you are reversing.
Grey & Green – Light Switch
Harness Plug X1 pin 28, dims the display at night so it doesn’t dazzle.
Blue & Red – Odometer Signal
Harness plug X2 pin 29, this helps the satnav with position if the signal is ever lost, like in built up areas.
Grey & Yellow – Instrument Illumination
I could not find a feed to take this from, so I scotch locked it to the Brown & Red ignition wire. It only illuminates the satnav dial on the control panel.
The numbers of the pins on the plugs are on the underside … so you’ll probably need to unplug X1 and X2 to find the correct pins.
