Although still in good working order, the coolant thermostat was replaced around 94K miles while fitting a new radiator to the Vectra. Note, the thermostat is located between the heads and requires the plenums to be removed to gain access as shown in the following photos … this is a quick guide, for a more detailed description on removing the plenum see the first part of my oil cooler replacement how2.
The thermostat and housing are all one part (Motorad 0652) rebranded (GM part# 24420652) and is supplied complete with O-ring for the housing to block seal. The metal pipe (GM part# 90411629) that feeds the radiator was also renewed in this case, but just replacing the two O-rings on the end of the pipe would be adequate if it hasn’t corroded badly (GM part# 9129999) found here.
The following steps show fitting the new Vectra V6 coolant thermostat and pipe, removal of the old one was straightforward although the pipe was a little difficult to remove from the thermostat housing due to some corrosion on the joint. The new thermostat is secured to the block with two bolts, ensure the O-ring stays in place during the fitting process.
Lubricate the two O-rings on the end of the pipe with a little oil then tread the pipe through the gap pushing it into the thermostat housing. Maneuver the pipe past the dipstick holder so that the bolt hole lines up with the pipe bracket, this can be awkward and can take a few attempts to get the bolt in. Tighten the bolt, then replace the rubber hose to the radiator.
